Volunteers

Our core volunteers are called “Companions.” They are the non-anxious, non-judgemental listening presence at the Center.  Each Companion give at least one full day per week (the same day each week) and one or two Companions are on site during all open hours.  They build relationships, become a trusted presence are there to offer a listening ear, and generally hold the space and tend the spirit of the women who come to us. They meet monthly with a local LCSW who donates her time for supervision.  Companions are a highly dedicated team, and each of them has a professional background in a field such as social work, chaplaincy or teaching. This is a unique aspect of our work that sets us apart from other service agencies.

All of our programs are volunteer led and offered free of charge so we gratefully receive various in-kind contributions of time that support our programming as well as office needs. For some programs we partner with area agencies: The Nutrition Center of Maine, The Sexual Assault Crisis Center, Safe Voices (the area domestic violence agency and shelter), Tri County Mental Health, Revelation Massage, and we soon hope to host The Art Van. We also often host student volunteers from Bates College and interns from USM’s nursing and counseling programs. Other volunteer opportunities include hospitality volunteers who staff the front desk, and participation on committees of the Board.

In 2012 an average of 30 volunteers monthly worked 785 times and logged over 2428 hours.
